My Own Private Literary Bias
The University book-store has been sold to Office Depot, and is now having a “going out of business” sale. The people of Israel saw the sale, that it was good, and all made way to the store.
The place was jam-packed, looking like a clearance sale in Ikea on a holiday or something. Long derailed lines for all cashiers, with an approximate waiting time equivalent to a complete life-cycle of some primitive vertabrae.
However, I am now the proud owner of some new books (to add to the piles of books in read-queue):
- The Society of Mind
, by Marvin Minsky, cofounder of the Artificial Intelligence Labaratory, MIT. I’ve read already about half of it from the library, good stuff.
- The Deeper Meaning of Liff
A dictionary of things there aren’t any words for yet – But there ought to be. By Douglas Adams and John Lloyd. I never seem to find The Meaning of Liff
, only the second one, but I decided it’s about friggin time I read this, no matter.
- Solaris
, by Stanislaw Lem. Now that he’s dead, I think it’s way overdue I read this classic.
- Mind Hacks
Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain, by Tom Stafford & Matt Webb. I read a bit of this last time I was in the store, and kinda got hooked. I’m such a sucker for pop science.
- The Blind Watchmaker
, by Richard Dawkins. Another classic, redefining evolution, I’ve heard only good things about this book, and I’ve been fascinated with Dawkins’ work for some time now.
- The Private Life of the Brain
, by Susan Greenfield, a leading neuroscientist based in the dept of Pharmacology, Oxford. A complete impulse buy, I saw it when I was in line and started paging through it, and just went for it. Now I see she presented that BBC2 series Brain Story I recently downloaded, which was excellent.
- Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus
, by Ludwig Wittgenstein. My nemesis and inspiration.
- The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat
, by Oliver Sacks. Heard so many things about this book in various psych classes, about time I got it.
- Jonathan Livingstone Seagull
a story, by Richard Back, photographs by Russel Munson. I have vague childhood memories of reading this.
- The Da Vinci Code
by Dan Brown. Yeah, I guess I’m going to have to read this too eventually.
So
Now I’m a *happy camper*. Bye-bye, don’t forget to *enjoy the sauce*.
