As always, nothing is ever simple. If you recall, we had some other shit going down Oct/2000 up north. The choice was to avoid the type of escalation which would force Israeli-Arabs into a corner where they literally become a fifth column.
As per the Lebanese side, it’s not entirely true they had 6 years to disarm HA. Syria actively refused these notions, and the Cedar Revolution was only about a year ago. So they had about a year, and talks were already in place.. Still, too little too late I guess, but you can’t blame them for trying to go about this through negotiations rather than by force. For one thing, it’s unclear whether te Lebanese Army is capable of doing that, and also, the Lebanese are hella frightenned of getting involved in another civil war.
So, we were all maneuvered into this proxy US-Iran war, with little choice. They have a saying across the border – “Iran and Syria will fight Israel till the last Lebanese!”
It’s always those who are preceived to be weak who pay the price…

I was in an “Avtash” (you know where) six years ago when we went out of Lebanon and I remember the words of all the leaders saying “We will strike hard if anything comes back at us from that border”.

Unfortunately, no one lifted a damned finger when things did fly from the border (including the Oct/2000 kidnapping of the 3 soliders).

That’s what happens when you leave loose ends.
That’s what happens when you say you’ll do X and eventually you do nothing.

This is always the price we pay.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of disintegrating Lebanon. We just need a couple of Neutron bombs to do that (and there won’t even be a lot of radiation left overs).

Someone just stood silently for the past 6 years and let Hizbullah become what it is today.
